The Story Behind This Watch. This is a daily worn and much loved example of a Panerai Paneristi Collector Edition PVD Luminor Marina. This watch comes complete with everything as received from Panerai. Released in 2003'by Subscription only' - The PAM 195 Paneristi PVD Luminor Marina was the first watch released by Panerai (since being acquired by Richemont circa 1995) to feature the Panerai Pre-Vendome'OP Arrows' Logo. This Dial adorning the OP arrows logo just above 6;00 hour marker was in homage to the original Pre Vendome Luminor Base, Ref 5218-201/A.
Additionally, the PAM 195 Paneristi watch was the first PVD Luminor watch to be released by Panerai since announcing the discontinuing of their PVD models after the C series (2000 Production Year). Interestingly, Panerai re-released the PAM 26 PVD Destro and the PAM28 PVD Power Reserve in subsequent release years after the release of this watch, but make no mistake, the PAM 195 was the first re-released PVD model circa 2003.
The PAM 195 caused tremendous controversy and resentment - over 5000 people submitted their name to be'selected' to receive 1 of the 200 units reserved officially for Paneristi aka Panerai Enthusiasts. Panerai vetted each name to make sure none where known'flippers' or dealers and that only the purest and most dedicated of the Panerai enthusiasts would receive one of these watches which would come with the collectors name on the caseback. The name on the back of this watch is'A Alvarez' and that name matches the name on the sticker on the box set and the Special Edition Certificate. Due to their creation specifically for, and ownership by, some of the most dedicated Panerai collectors in the world, PAM 195 pieces rarely come up for sale.Features the iconic 44mm Luminor case with black PVD coating factory applied by Panerai. The drawback of PVD coating is that when it comes into contact with another surface, it will tend to scratch off and show the stainless steel finish underneath.
The upside is that marks on the PVD coating are worn like war wounds and no 2 PVD watches look exactly alike. You can tell this watch was well worn from the visible signs of wear in the PVD coating. (not unlike the patina so many new watches try to create). Best of all, this crazy collectible and rare Panerai is (Time CAPSULE) Complete - Panerai did not disappoint in the packaging department! Paneristi is the name of the dedicated Panerai forum online, and was one of the first online communities to be noticed by the brand they so admired.
Obtaining a PAM 195 was no easy feat, as it involved applying for the piece and being selected by the moderators of the forum AND the brand itself! Each one of the 200 lucky collector would then be presented with a personalized PAM 195, with their name engraved on the case back and becoming part of the provenance of the watch itself.
